"I am larger, better than I thought; I did not know I held so much goodness" --Walt Whitman

We are a Catholic School established in 1850, staffed by the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth and a certified lay faculty. Assumption School is the second oldest Catholic School in the Paterson Diocese.

Assumption School's primary concern is to spread the Gospel message of Jesus Christ to all students entrusted to us. These children will be the new messengers of Christ who will continue to bring the Gospel message to those they meet. Assumption School is, in the Catholic tradition, in existence for the development of the holistic child so that each baptized person may have a place as a Christian in the Church as well as in the global community. Our tradition embraces God, family and attaining the realization of our philosophy.

We strive to bring to our students the knowledge that they are individually gifted by God and that it is incumbent upon them to realize these gifts. Through nurturing by the administration, faculty, clergy and family, each child is encouraged to achieve the optimum of his/her potential.

We are aware of the changing world in which our children will journey. In light of this, we continually evaluate our curriculum to meet the demands of the future. In so doing, we endeavor to help our students face the academic challenges which will be placed upon them in their travels

The Mission of Assumption School is to provide students with both the educational tools and spiritual values they will need to become productive, morally mature members of society. Our mission includes providing a quality education based on a comprehensive curriculum that is enhanced by spiritual, social and cultural experiences.

Assumption School admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.

Assumption School prepares the new generation of Christians for a life centered in Christ by educating the children in all academic areas, the Gospel and Catholic teachings; celebrating the Gospel in Word and Sacrament; living the Gospel by example as teachers and students. We provide our children with a faith community and a program of development. Based on our philosophy we feel that Christian respect and responsibility are the foundation of an Assumption School education. We hope each child will develop self-discipline as he/she matures. Each child will be held accountable for his/her actions and if necessary, appropriate disciplinary measures will follow. Everyone has a right to feel proud about himself/herself, a right to be happy in school, and a right to a safe and secure education. The educational experience of each student is most successful when students, parents, faculty and the principal together support the School's aims and values.

Assumption School is a celebration of message, community and service. Instruction includes Catholic doctrine, faith, prayer, liturgy, scripture, and sacraments. Our school encourages each student to accept the challenge of being a Christian in tomorrow?s world. As a faith community, Assumption School emphasizes those values which encourage students to accept others rather than exclude them, to understand the differences between right and wrong, and to commit themselves to serving God by serving others.

We share with our children a life-giving cycle of mutual giving and receiving. We share a respect, a responsibility, and a moral obligation with the parents in allowing the child to say "I am larger, better than I thought; I did not know I held so much goodness" (Whitman).

We encourage parents to read and review this policy with their children.
