ACTION ALERTS – FROM THE NEW JERSEY CATHOLIC CONFERENCE

Nonpublic school transportation continues to be problematic for many students with the result being that parents receive aid-in-lieu payments instead of transportation. Parent’s aid-in-lieu does not help in getting their children to and from a nonpublic school because many parents have no alternative other than busing. Our parents are at the mercy of private bus contractors who provide over 85% of nonpublic transportation.

The New Jersey Catholic Conference and the New Jersey Network of Catholic School Families fully support an increase in the statutory ceiling of $1,000 per pupil for transportation. The increase should at least be $50.00 per pupil in order to have transportation routes run for our students.

Call, write or email the Office of Governor Phil Murphy and ask for the requested increase to $1,050. For more information on this issue, please see the attached form.

Chapter 192 (Compensatory Education) provides remedial instruction in Reading, Language Arts, and Mathematics for students in nonpublic schools. However, the program service been reduced as a result of an increase in enrollment in the program and the freeze in funding at $995.33 since the 2008-2009 school year.

The amount of time provided for the service has also been decreased since the 2008-2009 school year as a result of costs incurred by the providers of the service.

The New Jersey Catholic Conference and the New Jersey Network of Catholic School Families fully support this issue in order to remediate children in compensatory education and to increase their success for the future.

Call, write or email the Office of Governor Phil Murphy and indicate that it has been over 10 years since this program has received a statutory increase. The amount listed in the Budget language should be at least $1,100.00 per service in order to provide additional time for the teaching of these three subject areas. For more information on this issue, please see the attached form.

HAITI PROJECT

Kids in Haiti need your help. Many kids can’t afford to go to school, so they are asking for some donations. The amount it takes to send one child to school in Haiti for a whole year is $100. That money pays for teachers, books, school supplies, and lunch. The Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, New Jersey, have set up a project so that it is even easier to reach their goals. The project’s name is Circle of Friends. It encourages you to get together with five friends and each donate $20 to help these kids. We would like as many people as possible to donate. $100 may not seem like a lot, but it can change these kids’ lives forever. For more information please go to https://www.scnj.org/.
