Weekly Word – April 18, 2021

Monday, April 19 – In person school resumes

This week’s weather seems to be warming up so boys can begin to wear their khaki shorts, girls do not need knee socks and on gym days everyone can wear the Assumption gym shorts and only Assumption gym shorts.

I am so happy to welcome the kids back on Monday- it’s been very quiet here at school all week. Rather than trying to bring everything back on Monday (we’d never get through the car line), please use Monday and Tuesday to return books, etc. This will make it easier for the kids on the bus as well. I’ve let the teachers know that’s what we will do.

After School will resume on Monday, April 19th. Hours for K-8 are 1:45 – 5:00. PK4 1:00 – 5:00.

Registration forms must be filled out before your child can attend. Forms can be found on the Assumption website under Forms/Back to School here: After School Registration 2020-2021.

FROM THE NURSE’S OFFICE: TRAVEL OVER EASTER BREAK

If your family traveled over Easter break, our expectation as stated in Sister Merris’ letter before break was that you returned to NJ by Sunday, April 11th.  The remote week was provided to allow families adequate time to quarantine before returning to in person classes.

In order to return to in person classes, your child must (1) quarantine for 10 days without a Covid-19 PCR test OR (2) quarantine for 7 days if Covid-19 PCR testing is performed on day 4 or 5 after returning to NJ.

Your child needs to bring in a copy of the negative PCR test result for Covid-19 upon return to school.

If the results are not available by Monday, April 19th or if you returned to NJ after Sunday, April 11th, your child must remain remote until (1) the PCR results are received AND quarantine of 7 days has been completed OR (2) they have completed the 10 day quarantine.

If you have any questions, please email the school nurses at the email addresses below.  We appreciate your cooperation in helping to keep our school community safe.

ST. JOSEPH’S TABLE – Next Collection April 27 – 30

School/Parish Food Drive during this Year of St. Joseph

In recognition of the Year of St. Joseph, the school and the parish will host a St. Joseph’s Table where we will collect nonperishable food items to be distributed to the Diocesan Catholic Charities food pantries during the week of March 15 – 19 and again April 26 – 30 in honor of St. Joseph’s upcoming feast days (March 19th & May 1st).

St. Joseph’s Table is a long standing Sicilian tradition. Legend has it that during a time of drought and famine, no rain fell on Medieval Sicily. Food crops for both people and livestock withered and died. The people prayed to St. Joseph for help. When the clouds opened, the desperately-needed rain poured down, and there was much rejoicing!

After the harvest, to show their gratitude, they prepared a table with special foods to honor St. Joseph and to share with the poor. After thanking and honoring the saint, they distributed the food to the less fortunate.

3RD ANNUAL GOLF OUTING

We invite you to send to the school non-perishable food items to be placed on the St. Joseph’s Table that will be set up in our lobby. We will have a special blessing on the food collected. All of your generous donations will then be transported to Hope House in Dover, Father English Center in Paterson, and Catholic Charities Food Pantry in Sussex County where it will become available to help our brothers and sisters in need. During this time of Lent, let us be most generous to help those who need it most.

FROM THE NURSE’S OFFICE: 2020-21 SCHOOL YEAR POLICY

Due to the continuing transmission of Covid-19, we would like to reiterate our policy regarding illness, in-person attendance and recreational travel.

Masks:

Regarding masks, please be sure to wash your child’s mask after each use and send an extra mask or two in with your child daily.

Travel:

The CDC and NJ Department of Health both strongly discourage recreational travel at this time. If you must travel anywhere out of the state, please know that we request a Covid test (PCR, not rapid) 4-5 days after returning to NJ. If that test is negative, then you must quarantine for a total of 7 days after returning to NJ. You must present the negative test results to the school upon re-entry. If you are unable to get a test, we require that your child quarantines for 10 days after returning to NJ.

Experiencing Covid-19 Symptoms:

Effective January 1, 2021, the NJ Department of Health is now recommending that “any child with Covid-19 compatible symptoms should not return to school until they have either received a negative viral test (molecular or antigen) for SARS-CoV-2 or they have completed an isolation period of at least 10 days since symptom onset and at least 24 hours after resolution of fever without fever-reducing medications with symptom improvement.” A purely alternative diagnosis is no longer accepted. We are strongly recommending a PCR test (not a rapid test).

To further clarify, students with Covid-19 compatible symptoms are defined as:

  • At least two of the following symptoms: fever (measured or subjective), chills, rigors (shivers), myalgia (muscle aches), headache, sore throat, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, congestion or runny nose;

OR

  • At least one of the following symptoms: cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, new olfactory (smell) disorder, new taste disorder.

If symptoms are noted at school the parent or emergency contact will be notified to pick up their child within 45 minutes. Students will be monitored and kept in isolation by the nurse until pick up.
